World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment’s MMORPG set in the Warcraft universe, has become one of most widely recognized games of all time. Boasting two expansions and over 11.5 million subscribers worldwide, WoW has re-established Warcraft as one of gaming’s top franchises. With another expansion on the horizon, World of Warcraft shows no sign of slowing down as it continues to dominate the MMORPG world.

World of Warcraft is a game that I hold in very high regard. Some of the best gaming memories I have are from playing WoW;  however, WoW has been scrutinized more than any other game that comes to mind, mainly because of its overwhelming popularity. Many non-gamers see World of Warcraft as a life-consuming, nerd-infested, virtual world for losers. Even within the gaming community, WoW is constantly under fire for being a monotonous grind-fest, rife with recycled content. While I can see some validity in these comments, World of Warcraft has become so much more to me.

Throughout the five and a half years I have played WoW, I have met some of the most interesting and genuine people in my life. The fact that the game can bring so many different types of people together is just amazing. WoW is also one of the most rewarding and satisfying games I have ever played. For example, fragging someone in Call of Duty pales in comparison to downing a raid boss with 24 other players. Whether you play the game for the story and lore, raid, or PVP, WoW has something for everyone, and has opened me up to a completely new and truly unique gaming experience.

The goal of these posts is to shed some light on aspects of the game that many people, casual players and non-gamers alike, may not experience. Expect interviews with players who raid on a weekly basis, their thoughts on the game, and the opportunity to see what it’s like in a high-end raiding guild.

In my next post I will provide you with a look at Blackrock’s #3 horde guild, Defenestrate, and a typical week for them.
