IDW and Topps announced today that they have begun production on their first-ever-big-budget Broadway musical entitled “Mars Attack: 21st Century Slaughter.” Comic book writer John Layman, who is best known for co-creating the best-selling comic book series “Chew,” will pen the musical, which is set to debut in 2013. Check out the poster for the musical and let us know what you think.
“Mars Attacks: 21st Century Slaughter” will be set in the same universe as their upcoming “Mars Attack” ongoing comic book series, which will debut in June. Here’s what writer/producer John Layman had to say about the project:
“Ever since I saw ‘The Sound of Music’ as a youngster living in New York I have dreamed of a career on Broadway and I’m very excited to be branching out into theatre,” Layman said via press release. “My approach to ‘Mars Attacks’ on stage is sort of a science fiction version of ‘West Side Story': a human and a Martian involved in a star-crossed romance, set against the backdrop of a violent interstellar war — with all of humanity caught in between! It’s going to be a rollicking good time, with songs that will make you want to get up and dance!”
Production and rehearsals are scheduled to start later this year. Check back for more “Mars Attacks” news as it develops.
